My Demon

by Michael Spurlock (author's profile)

My Demon

There's a demon deep inside of me
He's trying to break through
He makes me say and do things
That I'd never say or do.
I do my very best
To keep him locked inside his cage,
But the liquor and the drugs
Show the light upon his stage.
At first he seems quite witty
Some even think he's cool
But the longer he's on stage
The more he'll act the fool.
Before you even know it
He's broken off his chain,
Now he's tearing through the crowd
With no one else to blame.
He ain't nothin' nice
His main goal is to destroy
He'll rampage through my life
Like it ain't nothin' but a toy.
He doesn't care about my friends
And he doesn't believe in love,
He looks forward to the day
That he can spit on those above.
It's rare that I can stop him
It usually takes a cop,
And that cop had better fight
'Cause my boy ain't gonna stop.
A couple shiny bullets
Put my demon on the ground,
And since that awful day
He hasn't made a sound
But every day I worry
Cause I know that he's still there,
Locked down in his cage
And grumbling like a bear.
The scars upon my body
Never let me forget,
He's awaiting another chance
On that, my friend, you can bet.
There's a demon deep inside of me
He's trying to break through,
He wants another shot
He's got so much to do!
