I hear you brother. I've been ther myself. I was one of the lucky ones and did not get caught. Been seven years since I touched anything and I still think about it. Stay brave and strong.
I served with you at 2Bn 8Marines and during 89 Med Cruz. I am so sorry to hear what you had to go through and will go through over the years. You were always a man of great compassion for his troops and ensure there welfare came first. I wish we would have kept in touch or been there for you in your time of need. If there is anything I can do, do not hesitate to ask.
Over 30 of us from 2/8 are kindling the Marine Brother hood on Facebook and there are many warm comments about helping right the wrong of Sr. Enlisted mental games, I am sure you remember.
Dave you will be in my prayers and my thoughts daily as you were and still are a Marine and one of my Brothers who will not be left behind. As this is public, I have your address and will write a more personal letter to you. I will try to include some of the comment but don't know if they will make through the screening of mail.
Just look at this as a long Med Cruz w/o Liberty (or water or a boat...LOL) and one day the Ship will pull back in for you.
Hey Sgt Linley this is Scott Gerkens, you may remember me as Lcpl Gerkens. We served together at 2/8. All the guys have started a group on facebook and we heard about your situation so I thought I would let you know we are all praying for you and hope you are well. You are a fine Marine and I was proud to have served with you.I hope you can see these posts and know we are behind you. You seem to be in good spirits considering your position. Just keep your head up and be proud of what you have done for this Country. Semper Fidelis.
Jeff and Ron summed up my thoughts as well or better than I could express them myself. I want you to know that we are all thinking about you.
In my opinion, you should not have been imprisoned. We know you have a good heart and a man with solid character. Let us know what we can do to help you during this trying time.
I think Ron voiced it best by saying that so many of us looked up to you back when you were with 2/8 COMM. In re-connecting with the guys from the unit, so many of them voiced similar feelings and said that you always treated us firmly, yet fairly and with respect. I have always looked up to you and modeled my own leadership after the traits that you displayed during our service together.
The fact that you are now incarcerated does not diminish the impact that you have had on all of us.
Please let us know how we can get in touch with you or if there is anything we can do for you.
Not sure you remember me but I served with you back in the late 80's early 90's...2/8...Comm platoon. I want you to know that a lot of young Marines looked up to you back in the day. I was one of them. That platoon didn't have a lot of great leaders but you were one of the great. I just want to let you know I still feel that way. I still think you are a great leader. I heard you tried to get an investigation started on the 2 so called leaders we had. I too tried after I left. I succeeded but never knew what happened. I want to thank you for doing that for those of us who didn't stand up for ourselves.
It devistated me to read about the trouble you have gone through and how bad PTSD got to you. The first thing I thought when I read the article about what happened was something inside must have brought you down. This was NOT the Linley (Chesty) I knew. Now I read your blogs and I can see the you I knew then. I will try to keep in touch with you if you wish. A lot of us from 2/8 have been getting together on FaceBook and I can tell everyone hello for you if you want me to. Take care and keep up with the posts as you can.
Have you ever once considered sending letters to each and every Family member (all generations) of the men that you murdered, asking for forgiveness?
Love and Forgiveness come from God. Do you believe?
If you think you should be released based on the fact that you are old, disabled and dying and costing us taxpayers so much money....I guess you should also think about all the money it cost us for years upon years to keep you there while you were physically fit.
I am a family member of Gary Dube.
This letter is not written to judge you. That is for God to decide.

LCPL Vaughn (Ron Vaughn)
The compassion of the people was very clear when you were convicted of your crimes. You got a plea-bargain and were not sentenced to death.
That was compassion.
