Joseph Yandle did indeed falsify service in Vietnam and used it as a cornerstone in a petition for commutation. He also cited rehabilitation and education (he earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree whilst incarcerated). He was the getaway driver whose partner shot and killed a man in an armed robbery.......he was not the shooter, another fact considered in his commutation. The truth was revealed 3 years later (hardly shortly thereafter!!) and his parole was revoked. He has been paroled and revoked twice since then with his latest parole granted in December 2014.

Joseph Labriola was sentenced as the shooter in a murder. He also granted himself parole by escaping from prison and stayed on the lam for 93 days before being recaptured and returned. He told a reporter from the Boston Globe as recently as 4 years ago that, if given the opportunity, he would escape again. Hardly an ideal candidate. LWOP is effective to the extent that it keeps murderers incarcerated and the public at large safe from them.

Now that Soffen has bought the farm I assume you will need another poster child. I am sure that you will find someone else to fixate upon. I'm just not sure that Joe Lab is the best choice.

Good luck on your return to the world. The humor in your letter made me smile and the other more serious parts were beautifully written. I hope you find your book store / tattoo shop and a trusty magician as well. It sounds like you've learned a lot and will do really well. You remind me of my dad. He turned his life around too and is now doing good. You seem pretty cool so I'm sure you will meet lots of cool people. Best wishes to you and God bless!

Ok - I'm saying hello so you know I'm here - for the moment. Damn you, I can never just let it go - even though I want to. No - don't call - I still feel the way I felt when I wrote - but I'm still out here watching....

Greeting's brother...
My name is Douglas Hopper and I'm currently
Housed down here at RJ.Donovan.I just read your
Artical in Barbara's SJRA Advovacate. And I just wanted to commend you on having told it like it is, brovo, excellent power point presentation.
Now, if we could just figure out a way to get the inmate population and the general public on board
About doing something to fight the CDCR rank and file perhaps then we could see and feel some real reforms. Thanks again for such a spectacular artical.
Respectfully Submitted

Hi Jennifer,

What a beautiful letter you wrote, titled "Purpose Comes with Pain".
Your writing is inspiring and I was brought to tears by your experiences and your strength.
I do not have children, but I hope that others who do or have gone through a similar loss will be encouraged by your wise words and feel stronger.

I admire your strong understanding about people having a purpose. By being alive and being in this situation, even if you used to wish you weren't alive, you are making a difference to other people's lives just by existing. Anyone who you speak to or who reads your words will be a better person for it, so be proud of your individual contributions and your purpose in life.

You must be a very strong-willed, determined person, not only to get through life with the terrible pain of your loss, but also with the other challenges you face every day like with your Business Technology and Customer Service class. It's wonderful that you've persevered with it and work so hard, despite never having used a computer before - this is an incredible achievement.

I hope one day you will receive the answers you're still seeking and can find both peace and justice.
Until then, know that there are people out there who care, people who read your writing even if we don't know you. We're all on this planet trying our best to get through life so we are all the same deep down.

Best wishes
Emma
