The Texas Department of Criminal "Injustice" (TDCJ): and the Exploitation of a Captive Consumer Base

Texas prison officials have a captive consumer base of 150 thousand slaves who are being exploited daily whenever purchases are made from the commissaries inside all the state's prisons. Prison officials purchase products in large bulk quantities, and at huge discounts. They then turn around and sell these "off-brand" and "inferior" products at exorbitant mark-ups. Prices for the most popular items are constantly being increased, sometimes as much as $1.00 or $2.00 dollars. What makes these circumstances truly egregious is the fact Texas prisoners are paid nothing for the work performed. We rely entirely on our loved ones for money [some text cut off] be exploited whenever we are given an opportunity to go to the prison's commissary to purchase the limited hygiene and food items allowed in these prisons.
