The Promise
(an altar call)
I once thought that I would need some time,
some time to change all of my old ways.
I'd fallen far, and I would need to climb
out of the pit—into his golden rays.
I didn't think I'd be able to stand
at the altar with the congregation.
I though I'd have to "come up with a plan"
to somehow earn my chance at salvation.
I wasted so much time and then I heard
that there was nothing that I could have done—
I would have to be cleansed by the word.
Reach the father through the blood of the son.
It was by grace that I would be saved
and not by any works of my own.
It didn't matter how I'd once behaved
his love and grace could get me to the throne.
So don't put off until tomorrow
that which you know should be done today
and risk getting caught in a web of sorrow
because you'd decided to delay.
He's at the alter, reaching out his hand,
but you need to take that first step—
I pray to God that you may understand
you are the reason why Jesus wept.
He came not to save the righteous
but to set the captives free—
He's merciful and He's gracious
just look what he's done for me.
He's standing there at the altar
and he's reaching out his hand—
take that first step—do not falter,
you are the first of the master's plan.
Don't put off until tomorrow
that which you know should be done today—
he's waiting for you to follow
let his great love show you the way.
He's waiting there at the altar
but it's up to you to accept.
You are the fruit of the master's plan
and he's the promise that God kept!
He's at the alter, reaching out his hand,
but you need to take that first step.
I pray to God that you may understand
you are the reason why Jesus wept.
But now—he's reaching out to you
as the promise that God kept!
Hallelujah!
