The Criminal Mind

Surrounded by criminals years at a time
has given me some insight into the criminal mind.
I met an inmate that had did five years.
He was clean for a while then
he reappeared.
His next bid was seven with
no parole.
In this bid education was
his goal.
He began studying law and
what it was about.
Soon others asked him to
help them out.
He continued his studies and
gave advice.
His assistance became very
precise.
Inmates were astonished
of what he had learned.
Sentences were reduced
some overturned.
He wasn't limited to law.
There were other things he did.
Soon he reached the end of
his bid.
Now he can resist a criminal's
temptation.
He also had experience in
carpet installation.
His release date gets shorter
yet it nears.
This inmate appeared ready
without any fears.
Days before his release he
discussed his plan.
When I heard it I couldn't
believe it was the same man.
He said living in the city so
far away,
there were things he could
do to receive immediate
pay.
He had many spiritual books
and constantly read the Bible,
so I asked what have you
learned about survival.
He answered if the cause is
good, it's justified.
This was my first step into a
criminal's eyes.
He began planning these crimes
without a second thought.
I brought to his attention what
if you got caught.
I can never get caught but
by coincidence
if that happens, I'll prove
my innocence.
This man blended in without
any sign
that he had in his possession
a criminal mind.
I gave him advice but he felt
superior.
To him, everything said was
inferior.
I wasn't present when he
was freed,
but before it, I witnessed
an unknown breed.
Skilled, educated, twelve years
prison time—makes no
difference to the criminal
mind.
