Subject: Stung by a bee

Learned recently that running barefoot has many health benefits. About five or six vets here have been running barefoot for years. I'm just starting out but have been stung by three bees in two weeks. Any suggestions? The most obvious is don't run barefoot, right... But I will continue. The second obvious point is stop stepping on bees. That one, I hope to get better at in time.

Meanwhile, many of us are prepping for the 5K/10K next month. A few are going to run the 10K barefoot! I've already seen them do it during practice runs! Not me. Maybe down the road. I will be content with the 5K for now.

This has only been possible due to the generosity of some friends. By their gifts on my commissary has permitted me to supplement my diet with tuna, milk, and peanuts. The chow hall meals may contain 30g of protein a day. Only if you work in the kitchen or run some hustle can you obtain enough food to get past bare survival and gain strength.

Of course, the gangs supply money for the young kids to thrive. Sadly, there is no incentive for these young men to turn away from the gangs. They've taken away any real salary jobs in the Illinois prisons. So you either starve, be a criminal, or be affiliated with a gang to get money to eat. Very few have families who can afford to give money. I am very grateful and feel blessed to have the help from family and friends over the years. May God bless you all.

Maybe I'll stop stepping on bees in the meantime. Honey is healthy... any benefits from bee venom?

Until next time,
David

David,
LOL, I wish I could tell you that bee venom had ANY health benefits! LMAO. Unfortunately, it could turn into an allergy and that wouldn't be good. Stay strong and hang in there! Running can be an important skill... like for when you step on a hive. :)

I'm sorry to hear about the lack of jobs affecting the inmates. There are videos on youtube circulating, and a documentary too, about how Denmark's prisons compare in stark contrast to the US. They are not like "prisons," they are "rehabilitation." Inmates get their own mini apartments, they keep their things clean and organized in cubbies - the "group home" style bedrooms looks clean and organized with furniture that looks like a home with windows and no bars. They have keys to their own place. The concept is - these people are going back out into the world so might as well teach them how to care for themselves. Obviously this wouldn't work for the more extreme offenders, but such a concept WOULD work for your average inmate. Seriously, give these people jobs, and hope - and reduce our ridiculous recidivism rates. The US priorities are all screwed up when veterans, children and inmate programs are lacking funding while industries get the government to pay for disposal of their pollution. (Red Tide... that's another story).

I should probably elaborate on that now and not leave you hanging. So in Florida, sugar farmers have an exorbitant amount of water runoff, filled with nutrients such as phosphate and weed/ bug killers like glyphosate. Both feed the toxic algaes. The governemnt is disposing of the water into Lake Okeechobee. But there's so much that if they dump it all there, they risk killing everything off. So the government transports it off both coasts and dumps it off the East and West Coast of Florida, causing massive algae blooms which kills off the wildlife. We have not only found billions of pounds of fish washed up on the shores, but dead manatees, dolphins, turtles, at least one shark and even a whale since they began dumping. Everyone around here is sick with coughs and colds from the toxic algae in the air, some people have had to leave their homes, and people are avoiding the beaches from the toxic smells. Businesses may go under. And the government has taken all this on instead of putting it back on the industries. Hopefully this election and new officials will change things. Seeing as how our current governor has received "donated" monies from sugar farmers recently, maybe he'll find his way out of office.

Take care... and keep running. :)
