Dear Outside World

by Christopher Trotter (author's profile)

Dear Outside World,
Come the New Year 2019, the facility here at Wabash Valley will be transitioning to a Wabash Valley will be transitioning to a new Global Tel Link (GTL) system and prisoners will be allowed tablets. This means that prisoners will now have basic technology at their fingertips.

When private corporations like GTL invade their way into the prison system, their objective is to prisoners and their families with outrageous fees for services. But the real concern is going to be the time prisoners will spend on the tablets watching movies, listening to music, and playing video games.

I wish that I could say that prisoners will use the technology of the tablets to take advantage of the educational, vocational, and legal programs that the tablets will provide. But I'm afraid to say that most prisoners will probably fall into the abyss of "menticide", in which their thinking is dead while their bodies are alive. It will be like waiting to live only to die, but in their mind, they call it doing time. So if thoughts are useless, then what does time?

I hope this thing called "menticide" doesn't take root inside the minds of our prisoners, especially our prison youth because if it does, then you'll see the mind separated from the body as if the soul never existed.

I'm about to read my book and call it a day. So to everyone who has a long one inside the belly of the beast, please warm them about "menticide" because the mind is a terrible thing to waste.
