Closer Without Joy
As time gets shorter, the end
is near,
Freedom's around the corner yet
still, there's fear.
Going to class days ago while
waiting in line,
A fight broke out on the next
level and it was very far behind.
I couldn't see the fight but there
was a cloud of dust,
Minutes later, one of the fighters
was right beside us.
An officer came down to find the
one on the run,
The Sargent came behind and
selected the wrong ine.
There were those who saw this
inmate blend into the crowd,
There's an unwritten rule called
"snitching" and it's not allowed.
Pulling anyone out of the crowd
How could this be?
Then I began to think that
that could have been me.
Then I made the decision I
wasn't just going to stand by,
Witnesses are not recognized
but I'll give it a try.
Now it's time for the hearing.
There's no need to rehearse.
Just give the plain facts and
hope the charge will reverse.
After the hearing, I couldn't
believe what I heard.
The cievienants decision was
totally obscured.
I knew my testimony wouldn't
have any merit,
Now my first thoughts are, "He
didn't even hear it."
That's why with my time getting
shorter and the end becoming
near,
I can't feel any joy until
I'm released from here.
