Amazons and Gladiators is a poorly casted, low-budget film that nevertheless tells the story of a heroic young Amazon girl, Serena, who watches her mother be murdered, her village destroyed, and family enslaved by Romans. Years later, she kills her patron in self-defense and escapes with her sister and an Amazon prisoner to join the tribe.
The movie paints an idealistic, nostalgic picture of Amazon culture and society as being Utopian and perfect, while the reality is a life of constant struggle and war. The movie depicts a completely free and matriarchal democracy, but our history documents the Amazons use of male slaves.
Serena eventually seeks vengeance against the Roman general and governor who slew her mother. She is victorious in single combat, a gladiator fight to the death, as her tribe assaults the Roman villa and frees the enslaved Amazons and Gladiators. The movie ends on a positive note with a feminist speech by Serena, demanding respect for women and threatening death to those who would enslave or oppress women.
Overall, I recommend watching the film, purely for its scripted content and revolutionary feminist idealism. Viva las Amazonas! ☆☆☆
