BLOG #7

The population of women in prison in the United States has grown by almost 800% since 1980.
Over 80% of the people in womens prison are serving time for actions that are property and drug related.-"CRIMES OF SURVIVAL"
The majority of women in prison are mothers and were the primary caretaker of their children before they were sent to prison.
Approximately 75% of women in prison have experienced abuse either as children or as an abused wife/girlfriend.
2 out of 3 men who are abusive to their wives/girlfriends barely get any time for assault, or even murder of their partner may warrant 7-10 years.
A woman who fights back against a violent, battering husband or partner, gets the maximum sentence allowed-20 to life!!
What is wrong with this picture?
Will anyone listen? Does anyone care?
I've contacted the National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women. I am also in contact with Austin School of Law Innocence Project..trying to go back to court.
It is taking a long time because I do not have the money for an attorney. I know if I had a lot of money when this occurred, I would not have gotten the sentence I got. I was an average class working parent raising 3 teen-aged boys and living with my mother.
Take the time to read this site and leave any advice and/or comments. I would like to know what's really on yall's minds!
Thank you!
