Figure And Ground Design Art

#101, page 2 of 2

This drawing was, as with posts #57-59, inspired by the fascinatingly complex designs I see swirling around on the back of my eyelids (apparently) when I'm waking up sometimes. It's but a poor portrayal of the real thing. Imagine this pattern to be microscopically small, printed onto an expanding & then imploding bubble in metallic/chromey colors & you're getting closer to what I see; then there's a bunch of bubbles making up a still larger pattern. Weird, huh? Hallucinations caused by sensory deprivation? You tell me!

The drawing tells us something about the unreliability & "miraculous" nature of our perceptions. Psychology calls it the "figure + ground" effect. When we look at it, we wonder if we're looking at a black four-petal floral design or a white four-petal floral design in a black space. Which one's the figure + which one's the background.

Let's get even deeper, or father away. Might it be a drawing of the super macro-verse, showing how not just "our" universe but other universes relate to each other to form yet ANOTHER greater level universe, + on + on...

I was contemplating the nature of the "fabric" of space-time, while taking notes from Ronald Clark's "Einstein", when I created this pattern, after waking up from some fantastic visuals. No, I could not seriously suggest this represents space-time; I think space-time is far less regular, maybe at every level of perception. And there are many levels of perception, which I hope this drawing helps open your eyes to seeing.

Sincerely,

Nate

Looks like it might be the back of your retinas? The eye is a strange organ!

Thanks Mate ( I'm replying to this post on my phone... I went to add 'Nate' there but my auto correct made it mate) SO my mate Nate... Thank you for thinking of of. I have completed all of the psychology subjects I'll be doing & am just doing criminology and a little sociology in the next 6 months. I wish I'd found btb earlier and I could have utilized this marvellous resource so much more :)

Take care! Nicki
