Hi Julio,
I just finished the transcription for your post "Is the Criminal Justice System Color Blind" and I have to agree with you in that no, it definitely isn't. The American Dream? Well, it turns out you can only have that dream if you are white, male, and get really damned lucky. We always talk about opportunities and whatnot, that if you will work hard you will move up the ladder, but the reality of the matter is that you can only go so far. I don't think it's so much that there are divisions between social classes, but that determination will only get you so far. Eventually, some sort of discrimination (of race, or gender) will pull you down.

Many, many people are subject to racial discrimination every day, and I completely agree with you -as long as we don't talk about it, nothing can or will be done to change it. Racism and sexism are still abundant in the United States -as much as we would like to say otherwise, we haven't gotten rid of them yet. They are an ever-present issue (one that I feel strongly about, as you've probably noticed by now from the tone of this letter -it's great, I love writing, particularly on something this close to my heart).

On the front page of the Between the Bars website, it states that "1% of Americans... are in prison" and the continuation of that sentence is that a large portion of those people are people of color. That alone definitely does not mean that they have been a victim of discrimination (they may have, but it does not necessarily follow). There are people of every race and of every color that will do something "bad", be it on accident or intended, and it is up to the justice system to somehow quantify their actions in order to pass judgement. Unfortunately, someone's race can have an impact (sometimes big, sometimes small) on how their crime is quantified.

Thank you, and keep writing.

I just finished the transcription for your poem "Running" -it's really touching. Between the Bars really benefits from having artists (poets, writers, illustrators...) like you share their thoughts and feelings. I think that (all of) your words DO help people "turn their life around". It would be great if more people knew about BTB -by spreading the word, we would not only be letting people read amazing poems, essays, and diary entries, we could share whole stories and the real people that they stem from. Make sure to keep writing.

I just finished the transcription for your post "A Cry Into the Abyss". Good poem, thanks for sharing. Keep writing, and know that the people reading your work on Between the Bars want to help you land. We will be your echo with the outside world :)

Hi Nate,
I finished the transcription for your post "The Realm of Conciousness: Part 1". My condolences about Hersch, I know from first-hand experience the destructions strokes can cause. However, having said that, your response to the occurrence was insightful. As of yet, we can't see or detect spirits. But then again, we don't really know what we're looking for. The human body shares a unique connection with the human mind, and although the majority of the population experiences their bodies react to their thoughts every day, we still have very little knowledge about how the brain actually works. Recently there have been many studies about microbes living in the human gut and how they may affect mental processes. I completely agree that we spend too much time an just the brain and the spinal cord. Wherever our "cognitive processes" come from, they affect the whole body. It's complicated, but the idea of a spirit exists within the mind which stems from something or someone somewhere and which takes its material form in flesh. We think, so we presume that we must exist, and the real challenge in life is sharing what we see and how we see it with others.
keep writing! (I presume there will be a part 2)...

Ahm....
didn´t you want to leave the topic "God" aside...? ;-)
Please notice this time it was not me who brought it on the table. ;-)))

It´s okay if you think he didn´t love us but I do think that Christians have the right to tell their opinion about that although it´s different from yours. Just as much as you are entitled to tell your opinion. ;-)
Especially as obviously that was on TV or radio and not especially talking to you.

Again my question:
Did they take the prozac away from you or was it you who didn´t want to take it any longer?
As far as I know prozac does make you depending on it....I once heard you easier get away from heroine than from the hardest psychopharmaka....(don´t know if that´s true, I never was on heroine....)

Okay, should have read all your new entries before asking on your Solitary Confinement blog. ;-)

So obviously in that cell, mail isn´t allowed either...?

That stationery....
ugh about the skull but the dragon is okay.
Prefer dragons for example with elves or something like that. Years ago, on holiday in the Netherlands, I bought some cards like that...which were drawn by Briar. They were named Moon Falls and Rhiannon (a Celtic goddess, as far as I know).
