Re: ENROLLMENT IN THE C.R.A.P.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am recovering addict with 17 years of continued sobriety/recovery; but I really only have today. In light of that fact, and under the reasons provided herein, I must decline enrolment in the counter-productive C.R.A. Program (CRAP). As compelling and dire grounds for this declination I offer the following;
1. In my six-part prisoner folder there exists documentation detailing the fact that I have completed six (6) separate aspects of the CRAP: Intro To Treatment, Relapse Prevention, Cognitive Skills, Anger Management, Intro to Twelve Steps, Family Violence Program, as well as other related programs at various institutions.
2. I am a graduate of the Spectrum Residential Therapeutic Community in Westborough, Massachusetts; a much more stringent and effective program than CRAP.
3. There exists an active "ring of thieves" in the CRAP, stealing property and literally prying open prisoner lockers. Such a criminal environment would place my sobriety, and positive adjustment, in very real jeopardy.
4. There exists a den of active addicts in the CRAP; smoking drugs in the unit on a daily basis. Such active addictive behaviour would jeopardize my recovery and I cannot allow myself to be placed in such an environment.
5. I am a prisoner rights activist who has written extensively on the failures of the CRAP. I would have to offer that the program would not want such an outspoken critic in its ranks; nor would this very outspoken critic want to attend.
I take my recovery very seriously. I will not jeopardize my sobriety in the CRAP; it would be truly foolhearty for me.
Sincerely,
Timothy J. Muise

Re: C.R.A. PROGRAM / UNSUITABILITY
Dear Superintendent Medeiros,
In an example of bad judgment your staff has "recommended" me for the CRA Program. I am unsuitable for the CRAP initiative for the following reasons;
1. I am a graduate of the Spectrum Residential Therapeutic Community in Westboro, MA., on which the CRAP initiative is based. I could teach the program.
2. I have completed (in prison) six (6) separate segments of the Spectrum CRAP elements with completion certificates in my six-position prisoner folder.
3. I have 17 years of sobriety/recovery based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and CANNOT jeopardize my recovery by being placed in the CRAP initiative where men smoke drugs nightly, steal out of other prisoners cells, and engage in many forms of anti-social behaviour which I left behind years ago.
If the facility was to subject me to P.E.S. consequences for my logical refusal to participate in the CRAP initiative those actions would be actionable.
As such I would ask that you instruct your subordinates to remove my name from CRAP initiative consideration and refrain from any P.E.S. consequences. I am working, enrolled in vocational education programs, and need the re-entry services of housing, counselling, and employment before my sentence expiration next August (2017).
Thank you for your time and anticipated cooperation. I am,
Respectfully Yours,
Timothy J. Muise
