HARLAN RICHARDS
Lovin' Cold Showers
Stanley Prison has preset water valves so that all prisoners can do is turn on a water handle and take a shower at whatever temperature the water is at. In addition, this prison was designed and built for 750 prisoners and now holds over 1,500.
The water heaters on the units can't keep up with the demand when a bunch of guys take a shower at the same time—such as right after the rec period ends. So the first few guys get hot showers and everyone else gets a cold shower.
This is really rough in the winter. But summer is a different matter. They keep the water valve adjusted so that the shower water is always too hot. It seems to take forever to run out of hot water in the summer. Believe me, it's no fun working out when it's hot out and then have to take a hot shower. I usually come out of a summer shower hotter than I went in.
A few days ago the valve malfunctioned so there's virtually no hot water. The hottest it gets is tepid—and I love it!
I have no idea why it's taking so long to fix. They need a part they had to order. I sent maintenance a message on the kiosk, thanking them for not fixing the hot water and asked them not to fix it until September. Meanwhile, most everyone else is whining and complaining. I'm just grateful to be able to cool off by taking a shower than get hotter because of the water temp is set too high and I can't adjust it.
Hooray for whatever glitch is delaying the repairs.
