RE: Father's Day Story Collection
To THE United States of America Government leaders:
My name is Harry L. Grant #395544 F.S.285 Redgranite Corr.Inst., Redgranite, WI 54970-925, I am an inmate, serving 57 years. I am writing you in regards to the injustice the telephone companies, the Department of Corrections are placing upon our backs, wallets of our families.
We are being charged excessive rates and surcharge for using the telephones to call our fathers, mothers, family members.
The telephone companies sometimes receive kick-backs, from being awarded "a sole source contract from the DOC of that state."
There is a huge profit from a sole source contract of all the collect calls made from prison.
This practice violates the First Amendment plus the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment.
I'm from the state of Indianapolis, Indiana, I'm serving time in Wisconsin. Redgranite, WI. My ex-wife recently had a breast removed to prevent cancer from spreading. The high telephone calls are too much, especially when we have elderly, ill family members unable to visit us, our only human contact is by voice over the telephone.
With the exorbitant charges they are unable to pay the phone bills, most are financially restrained from keeping in close contact with our loved ones. We are burdened by child support, utility bills, have low salaries, cannot pay their incarcerated father, mother, son, or daughter's 350 dollars a month phone bill.
The DOC prison cannot offer no rational basis justifying putting the surcharges on the backs of prisoner's families, friends, those people in our lives that are providing counseling, professional assistance.
Thank you for your time, effort.
Sincerely Harry L. Gant

I am writing to let you know about Prison Action News, a biannual journal of prisoners' stories of resistance to incarceration. Written by prisoners and edited and distributed by outside volunteers, PAN has about 1,600 incarcerated subscribers across the US. It is a great outlet to both read and publish stories about fighting exorbitant phone prices, or any other oppressive aspect of prison life. If you would like a free subscription to PAN, write to:
