RESOURCES

Hello friends,

"When all you have in your toolbox is a hammer - every problem seems like a nail". :D I don't know WHO said that first, but I can work that line into almost ANY topic. :D

Whatever led you to explore a site like Between the Bars - if you have developed an interest in issues that affect 2.3 million incarcerated Americans - there will be a valuable list of resources included with this post.

By the way, that figure of 2.3 million covers both state AND federal prisoners - however, when you factor in those who are in local jails, county facilities - on probation, parole or some type of "community control" - that number rises to over 7 MILLION! That's 1 in 3 Americans under the "care, custody or control" of our judicial system - each one of those individuals has friends, family and associates... pebbles in a pond whose ripples reach for distant shores.

Consider: 700,000 inmates are released each year! Be concerned... be compassionate.

Books Can Open Doors

Prison Book Program
www.prisonbookprogram.org

Prison Book Program exists for one purpose > to send free reading material to U.S.-based prisoners. We have been doing it since 1972. We are not a library and have no books for sale. All books and other reading materials are donated to you free-of-charge. Please feel free to share these books and the ideas in them.

PBP works to fill your book requests as quickly as possible. Sometimes, we receive such a large quantity of letters that your request may be delayed anywhere from 5-7 months. So please be patient with us.

PBP can rarely match specific requests for titles or authors, but we try to make the following book categories available:

* Dictionaries, Thesauruses or Reference (please specify)
* GED and Education (Math, Science, Reading or Writing)
** Please let us known what grade level would be best fit for you (i.e. 1-12, college, professional)
* Health, Psychology, or Self-Improvement (various)
* Social Sciences (Political Science, Philosophy, Psychology)
* Foreign Language - various, please specify
* Ethnic Studies (Native or African American, Latino/a, etc.)
* History or (Auto)Biographies - various, please specify
* Religious or Spiritual Studies - various, please specify
* Sports or Hobbies - various
* Fiction: classic, contemporary, fantasy, thriller, short stories, drama, poetry or plays.

PBP rarely has books on real estate, investments, small business, specific laws, almanacs, Spanish/English dictionaries, Wiccan spirituality, LGBT, large print (of any kind), westerns, or trade skills.

Go ahead and ask us for any subject, even if it is not listed above. You might just get lucky! Please provide us with different subjects to choose from. If you send us 3 options, we will most likely find a substitution and/or your 2nd or 3rd choice. If looking for a specific author, please provide the type of books they write.

PLEASE HELP US HELP YOU:

* Print your FULL NAME, ID#, and ADDRESS in the body of your letter as well as in the return address of the envelope. Please PRINT clearly.
* Tell us the exact restrictions your facility places on your incoming book packages (for example: paperback only, hardcover okay, maximum #, new books only, newish or good condition ok, no dictionary, invoice required, or prior approval needed, etc.).
* Let us know if you are in the process of being transferred from one location to another location. We'll do our best to keep track of your exact location and get your books to you.
* Stamps, pre-stamped envelopes and self-addressed stamped envelopes (SASE) are welcome, but are not required.
* Our packages are shipped via United States Postal Service, using media mail rate.
* We do not offer any pen-pal services.
* We will only honor two book requests per person per year, because we have a limited budget.
* Only one dictionary per person will be honored.

Unfortunately, we do not send books to California, Illinois, Maryland (except Jessup, Cumberland, & Hagerstown), Michigan, Nevada, Texas, & certain individual prisons. We are happy to send a National Prisoner Resource list, as there are other free book programs that serve these states.

WHO WAS LUCY PARSONS?

Lucy Parsons (1853 - 1942) was a radical American labor organizer, anarchist, and remembered as a powerful public speaker. She was born in Texas (likely as a slave) to the parents of Native American, African American, and Mexican ancestry. Because of her singular fight against social and economic oppression, Lucy led a controversial life. Lucy Parsons always kept a sharp eye on the social revolution that she was convinced was necessary to change what she saw as the glaring excesses of the oppressive capitalist system.

Lucy Parsons was a fearless revolutionary.

The legacy of late Lucy is alive in the Boston area where, one can find the Lucy Parsons Center, a bookstore and gathering place for a wide range of anarchists, political radicals, activists, and general concerned citizens.
