Thanks for your support nustudent. There's so much that could be done to make prisons more effective, but popular opinion is more concerned with punishment rather then rehabilitation. Yet statistics show that recidivism increased dramatically when the country took a "tough on crime" approach in the mid eighties. The ones who pay the price for this is every citizen who has been victimized by a re-offender. Most people in prison will be released. The question is, do we want an angrier more bitter ex-con, or someone who has been exposed to effective rehabilatitive programs? As to further publicizing the ideas put forth in this blog, how would you suggest I go about doing that?
Thanks for your thoughtful comment, manicof. one question? Maniac of what? You're right a change in prison is now critical. It has been said that a society can be judged by how it treats its criminals. If that's true, we have a lot of work to do. What gets me is that prison officials don't even care if inmates take responsibility for themselves or not. Isn't this a key component in rehabilitating inmates?
