Your Average day in Prison

Its 2:30 AM and I've just woken up for breakfast and a daily change of clothes. By time both of these things are done its close to about 3:30 and the opportunity to go back to sleep. [drawing of sleeping, snoring face]

Its 8:30 AM and I hear the call for count. I wake and refresh myself. If I have coffee I heat up a cup or ask my celly which fortunately is quite generous.

I don't have a radio but fortunately my celly does and I listen to a morning talk show "Kidd Kradict in the Morning" after the show ends at 10:00 AM a prepair for chow call is made for lunch and I put all my supplies together to take to the day room for drawing. Most people spend their time watching TV, playing games, or hanging around talking. After lunch I find a table and start my day of drawing. A lot of us has jobs and no they aren't paying jobs. I just so happen not to have one presently. I'll spend most of this time trying to draw stuff for others. Spending mostly about 4 hours until Dinner is called. I'll take this time to eat and when I return take my daily shower.

Afterward if I still have a few drawings to go I'll get back to it and spend another 4 hours if there is enough work for this is my job. Most are blessed with family to help provide. Myself not so fortunate. If I don't have any drawing to do I play a little chess or watch a TV program. The highlight of my day is mail call hearing from the few pen pals I may have. Its my only connection to the outside world. Some have the opportunity to use the phone but I have no one to call. A lot of guys try and earn a living to provide for themselves inside here by drawing on Illustrator Boards, selling them to other inmates. Some make cards like myself and they sell them for .50 for regular cards to a dollar for pop up. Some guys make cookie pies. They buy cookies and make desserts for others to buy, doubling their profit. Some even clean peoples cells and wash other peoples clothes. A person has to do what they have to do to survive and enjoy the luxury of items from the commissary.

After my day is completed I look for books to read and try to spend a few hours before I go to sleep reading. I love to read and books are hard to get especially good fantasy. We can't have them sent in directly we can only have them sent in from the bookstore or ordered from Hoistings. The prison is quite picky about this.

After all is said and done I ready myself for bed and start it all over again the next day.

It's admirable that you have been able to find a productive and useful way to keep your mind occupied, which is no small feat when everyday is almost exactly the same as the last. In looking through your blog, your artwork is beautiful so please continue to share! My best to you. -Melanie
