State of Florida vs. Marissa Alexander
Domestic Violence and The People's Demand for Justice for Marissa
As the state of Florida gears up to retry Marissa Alexander in July of this year, the voices of the people increases in their demand that justice be done and all charges dismissed with prejudice.
Marissa is a law-abiding mother of three from Jacksonville who, in 2012, was forced into the precarious situation of having to defend herself from a violent assault at the hands of her estranged husband. At the time of the violent incident, Marissa had an "active" protective order/restraining order against her estranged husband as a result of previous incidents wherein he violently assaulted Marissa.
"Self-defense is a declaration against domestic violence and a human right of the victim."
—Lakeith Amir-Sharif
During the violent encounter with her estranged husband, Marissa, fearing for her life, was able to grab her legally registered gun and fire a warning shot to scare off her attacker and caused him to leave her home. Marissa did not hurt anyone, and she has no prior criminal history. But that did not matter to the state prosecutor Angela Corey whose decision to retry Marissa exposes the hypocrisy of the U.S. criminal justice system.
For the "crime" of defending herself, Marissa must endure another unjust trial since Marissa's original aggravated assault conviction was overturned by court of appeals in September 2013.
The case of Marissa Alexander is opening Pandora's Box concerning a racist and two-tiered court system, the oppression and exploitation of women of color, and the criminalization of survivors of domestic violence.
