Memorandum
=======================

Date: June 7th, 2017
To: Whom it May Concern
From: California Prison Industry Authority - 1 Main Street - San Quentin, California 94964
Subject: Mr. Edwin Hutchison CDC# P-68859

I am writing on behalf of Edwin Hutchison CDC# P-98859, aka "Zakee", in support of his pending release from prison at his supervisor and instructor for Code.7370, a Career Technical Education (CTE) program created by the California Prison Industry Authority (CalPIA) and The Last Mile (TLM) to each offenders computer programming languages in order to become front-end developers. Our rigorous curriculum teaches men to be self-sufficient learners and researchers of HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create functional websites and web applications, useful in today's society, without ever having access to the Internet. Resultant of this difficult task, men in this program do not have time to get into trouble if they plan to finish this course. In fact, our "zero tolerance" policy would have them removed if they did.

I have known Mr. Hutchison since April when I brought him in for an interview and ultimately accepting him to start on April 24th. Since then, he has demonstrated an incredible work ethic and ability to adapt to the daily frustration that less than 2% of the population in the world understand: writing code. Thus far, he has persevered throughout this process, rising above the challenge inherent in completing this task with a handicap: computer access four days a week and, again, no Internet, the most common resource for problem-solving in the coding industry.

With this in mind, I recommend that Mr. Hutchison is ready to be released. He will be a great benefit to society.

Submitted in earnest,

Dear Commissioners of the Board of Parole Hearings:

This letter is to confirm that Edwin Hutchison (CDCR #P68859) has been enrolled in Patten University through the Prison University Project since the Spring 2009 semester. Mr. Hutchinson graduated with an Associate's Degree in General Studies in the summer of 2016.

I first met Mr. Hutchison in the spring of 2016 as his instructor in Comparative Religions. Mr. Hutchison quickly established himself as a dedicated, engaged, and collaborative member of our class. Not only did he have outstanding attendance and homework records, but he spent his time in class deeply engaged in our discussions and carefully and diligently completed his out-of-class assignments. He communicated clearly and thought deeply about the course material. He always treated the other students in the class with courtesy and consideration.

As a coordinator, I have seen Mr. Hutchison participate in class and in the college environment with the same dedication and seriousness that he brought to the Comparative Religions course. Mr. Hutchison has demonstrated a commendably dedicated, engaged, and collaborative attitude during his time in college. He is a valuable member of our college community and an alumnus in good standing. Please contact me if you have any further questions about this information.

Sincerely,
