I have a short answer to your question... I believe, yes, whole heartedly that people deserve a second, (or third, or fourth) chance; some are slower learners than others but we should never give up on each other.
Since you referenced Pandora's box I feel the need to share with you that I live in the part of the world where the Pandora came to grief on the Great Barrier Reef when it was in search of the Bounty (of mutiny on the Bounty fame). We have a live replica of Pandora's box in our local museum (that's your useless fact for the day ;)
I would also like to suggest that not all readers are ignorant enough to believe you lived in a vacuum before you were sentenced at 18; I for one believe the story began long before that... we've all come from somewhere and are all a product of all our life experiences. I realise this is an older post but I hope you start writing again.
As a Psychology student I know these are significant problems which are magnified within the prison system. I'm glad to hear that you were able to overcome these destructive ways of dealing with your pain. The mind is incredibly powerful. I applaud you for reaching out to help others and would love to hear if you have remained on this path since your release.
I see this post is 2 years old now but thought I'd comment regardless, (in case you still haven't realised the answer on your own) I taught myself the answer to your first question when I was 18 & faced with the prospect of being 'hurt to the point where death seemed better than life'. I believe the answer to be you must love 'yourself' first and foremost. To to show yourself a healthy respect (which also makes you more lovable in the eyes of others) love with all you have, but don't ever forget yourself in the equation. & yes; a lot of women are fiercely tedious... haha.
It doesnt surprise me that there are broken bones especially, mainly because so many who are kept inside for so long get brittle bone density due to lack of vitamin D / vitamin D 3. I totally understand your point of view regarding medical and avoiding it and also about the outrageous pricing, especially for those who may not receive any help financially from the outside and have quite a lot of years to spend in there. Wishing you both the best with staying in touch, as I know from experience the cyst thing is not pleasant (and neither is the surgery if cancer is hormone fed which means they dont even give you medicines needed to help with the huge changes- mood swings and such that suck!) and can be time consuming due to tons of medical appointments before and even more after you find out what has to be done from there forward. Perhaps I should clarify: please, Mr Pinson, tell us (regale, if you will) all the good acts you've done for humanity. Please be specific as to your list of "good deeds". I will take them into consideration as a model for what I NEED TO DO FOR HUMANITY. (A list of your good deeds will help).
I hope that you have gotten in touch by now with the one you cared so much about who you thought had disappeared. I see that she didnt, and that is great news. Those out here may get sidetracked/busy taking care of business and making the right decisions etc but if they love you, I hope the responses above that you received show that they will never truly disappear from your life forever!
