New Years--Old

New Years - old

This morning felt no different than the day before. As New Years quietly fades into obscurity, along with the myriad broken resolutions, we are more on track to obliterate ourselves instead of becoming a self-sustaining power. Yep, thanks to mankind's perverted notion of stewardship we can increasingly expect to see a violent, unstable, and sickened world for our next generation.

I wonder how the inheritors of this planet will reverse all the havoc we've created for them, especially when they are just as likely to play it forward and continue on the path of exploitation.

Another thought on this is what sort of incentives would they have in cleaning our mess? We have so thoroughly thrashed the ecosystem that, barring some extraterrestrial intervention, we are too late to save the planet. Even the scientists have made this point clear.

There are things that civil engineers are doing, with the aid of the greatest minds of the day, however, the statistics for eventual extinction of the world's populations, by our past exploits, don't look good at all.

In addition to the above-mentioned dilemma, add to that the historic political and socio-economic factors which have plagued this debate from the start. What incentives, indeed, does a private industrial enterprise have in spending billions in the greener technologies when the regulators in government are so receptive to bribes and lobbying movements. I dare say that the disease on our planet first started with these people. But I partly blame myself for being a no show in past elections, whereby these politicians took power.

Finally, I have a morbid fascination with how this planet's demise will happen just as we are adopting exciting new technologies, in various fields, that may have had an impact on our current path. If we only had started it sooner this mess would have been averted, but now we are too late to reverse the damage; and worse yet, we will be dealing with the corrupt politicians and greedy corporations all the way to the grave. Because mankind, he is an inherently evil and most curious being.
