Is Trump Right?
President-elect Trump has been quoted as consistently saying that our system of government is rigged. I wonder if Trump said this having already contemplated our system of justice?
Sure, there are corrupted people in business and in our policies that perpetuate the inequality we see every day around us, but what about the system of justice and how it is against the personal freedoms of people of color?
I am not so sure he has blacks' interests in mind while giving voice to supremist elements in our country. However, the reason he appeals so much to blacks is because the alternative is the same ol' program with the Democratic policies. Side with one, and there is little to no progress. Side with the other, and there is a real danger of reversal of progress. What gives?
My experience as a black convict in this system of justice tells me that we have a long way to go. Every day, I see the corruption of officials who are more interested in maintaining the status quo than are interested in true change.
Even with this constant reminder of how far we are as a people must go before reaching equality, I am optimistic with respect to recent changes in California's direction on incarceration.
Changes to our system of justice must be aimed at normalizing ex-offenders, not just simply punishing them and permanently removing them from the community in prison warehouses.
Suffice it to say, perhaps a middle of the road in a party?
