Stanley Phone Rules Suspended
On October 30, 2019 I wrote about the new phone restrictions in Stanley. For the last two months we have been required to sign up a day ahead of time to make a phone call. During that time, the phones often sat empty while prisoners who wanted to make phone calls were denied the opportunity to do so. During that time, two additional phones were installed in each wing. These phones were designated "free for all" phones which did not require signing up to use. Those phones were frequently in use while the four original phones still sat empty most of the time.
As of December 23rd, the phone restrictions have been rescinded—actually that's not quite accurate. Restrictions have been removed on five of the phones while one phone stays restricted. However, in practical application, no one is signing up and all phones have been in almost constant use since Monday. It is especially important today because it's Christmas and most guys want to talk to their families.
Here's another pleasant surprise: CenturyLink phone company gave every prisoner a free ten minute phone call. In Wisconsin prisons, there are almost 25,000 prisoners. That's 25,000 free phone calls which they didn't have to do and which provides the company with no tangible benefit. I don't know what their contract with the Wisconsin DOC is. Maybe it requires CenturyLink to give us free calls on Christmas.
The point is, it's a wonderful gesture which will allow thousands of prisoners to make calls they couldn't otherwise make. Thank you, CenturyLink!
