Thank you for your comments. I don't know if you've ever read up on Sen. Joe McCarthy, a
senator from Wisconsin who gained renown with his anticommunist witch hunts. He headed up
the Committee on Unamerican Activities. He was a demagogue who was finally stopped by
somebody - | don't remember who - but even after his power base was taken away, there were
millions who still revered him. When he died and was given a funeral in his hometown of
Appleton, Wisconsin, multitudes of deluded followers turned out to honor him.
Back in the 1950s, adult Americans had lived through World War Il and knew what tyranny
looked like. The general public shunned him. For his followers, McCarthy was saving us from
Communism. For everyone else, he was a fascist trying to take control of our country.
We need our citizens to be more educated and knowledgeable, but sadly nowadays many
children growing up adopt their parents' biases without ever scrutinizing them.
All we can do is to keep on standing up to the bullies of the world and hope our efforts will bring
the light of reason to those who are currently being led astray.
