A Little About Me

I am a 31 year old African-American male and the oldest of thirteen children: eight boys (not including myself) and four girls. I am also the proud father of three boys, aged six, seven and sixteen.
I grew up in one of the most dangerous parts of Milwaukee's inner city - A street named First and Keefe (?). While growing up I allowed myself to become a part of the gang culture and all that went along with it. I started smoking weed at the age of nine, and committing crimes "in the interest of the gang" when I was eleven. By the time I was twelve I had "earned" a position of respect among the younger members of the gang.

I don't know if that covers who I am, so let me attempt to cover myself a little more; I am a man who has learned through trial and error the true meaning of manhood ~ every day that I wake up I do my best to become a better person and not make the same mistakes as the day before. I've realised that it's not where I am or how much time I have, it's what I do where I am and with the time I have that matters. I am a human being who values life, family, community and education. I am a man who wants to leave behind a positive legacy for all to follow. I am a person who seeks to find peace, forgiveness and understanding. Last, but not least, I am a man who wants to rebuild (if possible) every relationship, life, and community that my actions and former lifestyle destroyed.

In regards to my interests, I enjoy reading, writing, songs, poetry, and short stories. I also enjoy travelling: going to festivals, concerts, and plays. I am into sports, mainly football, but I also like to watch extreme sports and Motocross. Other than that, I am easily entertained.
I hope that this gives you a better look at who I am and want to be. OH! I almost forgot, I am also in college, studying sociology and valuing diversity.

Wow, huge family! I have no brothers or sisters. What was it like to grow up in such a huge family?

The nicest thing about reading this is that you see where you went wrong and are doing everything in your power to put it right and become a better person through your experiences. Thats what makes reading this blog so touching, your words speak volumes. I received your letter today (9th March) and I will be posting one back on Monday (11th March) :-)
