Rich, I just looked up the cost of Connecticut tags. After getting your car checked out for %15, it costs about $80 for tags (depending on the type of vehicle).
After reading a couple of your letters on http://www.prisonactivist.org/, I'm writing to make a request that could end up being a win-win situation. We are writing a book about "felonism" about the socially accessible and institutionalized prejudice against people with felonies and people who love them. We "invented" this word to identify our years of frustration (and witnessed felonism imposed on MANY more). You can see our federal case in Dixon v Holland – 1999. We also won in the TN Supreme Court in 2000 when his illegal sentence was overturned.
This is the 1st book on felonism. Most of it will be comprised of stories by people in various walks of life who have personally experienced and / or demonstrated felonism. Would you be willing to write a chapter for our book? I cannot promise you money, but if your article is used AND IF it generates enough for each contributor (including us) to receive $500, we will make a one-time-payment to every contributors included in the book. The worst that could happen is that each published contributor could say they have been published. It is my hope to start a blog in the near future that would be a showcase contributors who are not published in the book.
Story must be real (but please change names and possibly locations to protect the innocent and guilty), personal, and specific. Please include descriptions of the emotional, physical, legal, mental and /or spiritual impacts you have experienced from felonism. We will send release forms to be signed by all contributors before publishing.
We have thee goals: eliminate the negative affects of felonism, eliminate generational incarceration, and transformed all prisons into healing centers. Big goals, but people laughed at Dr. King's dream that black and white children could unite and be treated equally. Racism isn't dead, but it's no longer legally institutionalized. These can happen..

I struggle with the trouble of "every little tiny thing goes wrong...yeah goes wrong" (Janis Joplin) well tonight it got to the crying point, and for me, well I'm tough...and people...like jb...how can they sleep at night, I wonder. So many ignorant people...in my life as well... so here I'm balling in my car, a ten year old Toyota Corolla (every thing i own fits iside) in the Walmart parking lot thinking how worthless I feel my life has been. It is really a shame that it's that hot in the quads. I cannot imagine living in the heat we have in PA without the benefit of air conditioning. The humidity plus the smell of so many people crammed together must be unbearable.
I do understand why the guards get air conditioning however. It is a pretty thankless job working as a prison guard, and I can only imagine the stress the correctional officers face on a daily basis. It would seem conditions would be much worse were they to not have a refuge from the heat, aggravation and general despondency that must come part and parcel with that job.
As to them getting their cars fixed, etc.... This does not seem like a bad thing to me. I am sure there are people in the system that appreciate the skills learned when they are finally allowed to leave, a skill would lessen the overall instances of recidivism, no?
Your appeal interests me. It is my understanding that first degree murder includes the planning of a murder, and your case would seem to be more of a crime of the moment type scenario. I suppose your actions afterwards, desecration of a corpse, grand theft auto, burglary, the list is quite long... Make the point somewhat moot however. You bemoan the waste of tax payer dollars, but wouldn't an appeal process be more of a waste of those same dollars... Which frankly could be better spent elsewhere?

When everyone on the outside is paying for cable (I know I certainly do, to the tune of about $180/month), I am at a loss as to why this should be an issue for you? No matter how you look at it, your life is at it's base level a "free ride" and has been for the large majority of your time on the planet.
I really do feel for your daughter though. I don't think the sins of the father should be visited upon their progeny, but I also do not think that a father is defined purely by supplying the genetic material to make a child. A father is able to be there for their children, and makes sacrifices in their own life to make sure that is a reality. Anything else is simply a delusional fantasy.
Well, I hope they day gets better for you. For me, I am off to the backyard to stand over a hot grill and cook dinner for the family. Ciao!
I'm one of the slackers you haven't heard from for some time but it's good to see you keep reaching out here regardless. From an Australian perspective, I don't know that American's are being seen as 'cowards'... a bunch of crazy people perhaps!
Your policies on gun control seem completely nuts when there are so many incidents of people losing their lives (our gun laws were restricted after our last mass shooting in 1996, where 35 people were gunned down & we haven't had another mass shooting since) we aren't able to license automatic weapons here at all (because why would you need an automatic weapon other than to kill a lot of people at one time) - one shot is enough to kill a kangaroo or a wild pig & they're the only legitimate reasons to have guns in this country. We don't have the attitude that we 'need a gun for protection' because no one else has one 'for protection', so why would the next guy (seems to make perfect sense outside of the US)
I'll agree respect is something that is lacking across the board (but perhaps that's just me getting older too).

It's been a while since I've been here to say hi (a long while!) I've moved cities, started working, (quit that job & am busy looking for another haha). & I'll be finishing my studies for the rest of the year (I've also taken on a double diploma course) but I just wanted to say hi. (HI!) I hope you're managing to keep your spirits up. I think of you often & will continue to stay in touch.

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you, and through this site, we do realise these incidents occur more regularly than we as a society should accept.
I guess prisons around the world do have various degrees of torture that occur in the name of punishment, and a blind eye is turned. In Australia I believe our prison guards are more accountable than American guards appear to be, still, unfair treatment occurs here too (it would be ignorant of me to think otherwise).
Our prison terms are not on par with your own, which is perhaps a saving grace for our population. We do not exclude people from voting when they're released from prison and I believe we have a much higher tolerance for giving people a second chance at life(perhaps that comes from growing out of a penal colony).
I'm sure your bones have healed, but the mental scars from such treatment will remain with you and I am sorry that you have to carry that pain with you. We as a society will be judged on how we treat each other and I agree, we should be ashamed of ourselves!
